The UK’s insect population has fallen sharply as the invertebrates are affected by rising temperatures and fragmented habitats.While the declines are dramatic, small changes to our homes and gardens can play a significant part in bringing them under control.

Lots of small changes can make a big difference

“The insect crisis is real and here, many scientific studies have shown serious declines in insect numbers and species with one of the major factors being a loss of habitat and food pathways due to our human urbanisation. However you do not need to read scientific reports to know this, I mean when was the last time you wiped an abundance of insects off your car windscreen?

Insects are important to our ecosystem as they turn waste into nutrients, completing many natural cycles that we depend upon to survive. A large percentage of our vitamins come from insect pollinated plants, as well as staple food crops. Insects have been around a lot longer than we have so we have a dependency on them not them on us – what i mean by this is if humans were to disappear insects would thrive, if insects were to disappear human would not survive.

So we are all responsible in doing our part, what we can, to provide food pathways and shelter for insects to help them flourish in our urban and mono culture areas. Converting sterile flat roofing areas into insect havens is a great start.
